APS Literature Award Winners

The American Philatelic Society has announced its winners for its three major literature awards: the USSS-Barbara R Mueller Award, the Charles J. Peterson Philatelic Literature Life Achievement Award, and the Thomas F. Allen Award. This year’s winners were announced at the Awards Banquet at APS StampShow in Hartford, Connecticut, August 23.

United States Stamp Society-Barbara R. Mueller Award
The seventh annual United States Stamp Society-Barbara R. Mueller Award for the best article published in the The American Philatelist, during 2013 was awarded to James W. Milgram for his July 2013 article, “Pasteup Usage of Western Express Franks.”

Charles J. Peterson Philatelic Literature Life Achievement Award for 2014
The fouth annual Charles J. Peterson Philatelic Literature Lifetime Achievement Award for furthering philatelic knowledge through philatelic literature was awarded to Robert P. Odenweller. These achievements may be the result of publication in traditional print and/or electronic formats, editorship, or the judging of philatelic literature.

Thomas F. Allen Award
Brian J. Birch and James William Negus (1997–2008) are the winners of the second Thomas F. Allen Award given for the best article published in a single year of The Philatelic Literature Review. Birch and Negus’ article “Unpublished Tiffany Manuscripts” appeared in the 1st Quarter 2013 PLR. The focus of the winning article is to be on philatelic literature, research, or libraries. It should share new research or knowledge or take a previous work and rework the information with new and interesting ideas, relevant to today’s philatelic researchers.
