Tiffany Dinner Speaker: Dana Gioia

APS member, Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee member, and Former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Dana Gioia will be the guest speaker at the APS StampShow Tiffany Dinner, August 16, 2012 in Sacramento, California.

Gioia, a native Californian, is an internationally acclaimed award-winning poet who has published three full-length collections of poetry, as well as eight chapbooks. His poetry collection, Interrogations at Noon, won the 2002 American Book Award. An influential literary critic as well, Gioia’s 1991 volume Can Poetry Matter?, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle award, is credited with helping to revive the role of poetry in American public culture.

A stamp collector since the age of 8 when his Mexican grandfather gave him a 4½-cent Hermitage first-day-cover, Gioia collects Vatican City, Italy, U.S. and Great Britain seriously, and dabbles in Germany and Russia. He has a huge collection of World War II patriotic covers and Vatican commercial mail. He also collects Staehle covers and poets on stamps.

He belongs to six philatelic organizations, including the APS and Vatican Philatelic Society. More information about Dana Gioia is available on the APS website
