Great American Series Course
The Great Americans Series is one of the largest and longest lasting definitive issues in U.S. postal history, with a correspondingly large number of production varieties for the stamp collector to pursue. The American Philatelic Society is offering a course on this series, to be held May 30–31, 2012 at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, Washington, DC as part of its continuing education series.
Students will receive an overview of the series’ history and then will delve into the production details — including presses used, perforations, papers, tagging details, and the break from Bureau of Engraving & Printing production into contract production. Additionally, students will have a chance to learn rate usages and collecting strategies. The cost for this course is $195 for APS members; $295 for nonmembers (with a $15 discount through May 9). Jay Stotts, from Houston, TX, will be the instructor for the Great Americans Series. Jay is a life-long collector, specializing in U.S. philately, especially twentieth-century definitive issues and postal history. He has collected the Great Americans Series since the early 1990s and has a ten-frame exhibit on the issue. He is also an avid student of the modern stamp production methods associated with this issue.
Jay has served on the Boards of the Bureau Issues Association and the United States Stamp Society (USSS) since his appointment in 1991. He was a co-founder of the USSS’s Fourth Bureau Issue Committee in 1989 and currently serves as its Chairman. He has won both the Hopkinson Literature and Exhibiting awards of the society and served as its annual show coordinator from 1991 through 2003. In addition, he has exhibited philatelic material for thirty years and has served as an APS accredited national judge for more than twenty years.

Parking for the course is convenient to the NPM at Union Station: tickets are available for 5–12 hours for $16 and 12–24 hours for $22. The D.C.
