Position Description
Create and drive a fundraising program to establish financial security and build an exciting future for the APS, the world’s largest philatelic organization, and the American Philatelic Research Library (APRL), the world's largest philatelic library. Lead the society’s headquarters staff to continuously improve the quality and cost effectiveness of the member services they provide.
Location
The American Philatelic Center, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.
Accountable For
-
Lead and drive significant and sustained improvement in APS/APRL fundraising, moving from the five-year average of about $540K/year toward a 2014 target of $1 million/year.

Lead and drive major improvements to member services while lowering their costs, and simultaneously increasing their gross income by at least 20%.

Create, implement and lead a membership recruitment program which maintains or grows current membership levels.

Carry out strategic plans and policies established by the eleven-member Board of Directors, and participate with the Board in developing future plan improvements.

Develop a positive and visible image with members and the general community.

Special Challenges
The successful candidate will be able to quickly develop personal relationships and inspire confidence, as a basis for a necessary game-changing approach to successful fundraising.
The successful candidate will be someone who has demonstrated change leadership of the highest order. She or he will be accustomed to holding themselves and staff personally accountable for results.
The American Philatelic Society’s annual membership attrition has been about 3.5%, a trend that will only be stemmed with a new approach to recruitment and retention. The staff is very experienced at delivering a broad palette of services, including national conventions. Their average length of service is about 24 years. A new CEO’s success will depend on her or his ability to lead staff effectively into new and more efficient ways of doing things, while honoring their experience and views, and encouraging and embedding a performance culture. The successful candidate will be able to navigate, both firmly and skillfully, the natural tension between delivering the plan and driving change initiatives.
