The Black River Stamp Club was founded in 1963 by Bob Frederick, a long-time stamp collector in Elyria, Ohio, who wanted to bring fellow collectors together to learn from each other.
Frederick and his friends helped build the club through monthly meetings, connections with dealers, outreach to the community and an annual show that now attracts collectors as well as the general public.
Recent show themes have focused on space exploration, Elyria industrialist Arthur L. Garford, Easter Seals, and the comic strips created by Medina County resident Tom Batiuk.
Club members believe stamp collecting is more than a solitary hobby, but one that can educate and inform, hence the outreach to the community through other organizations, local history and well-known individuals.
BRSC also undertakes an annual collection of stamps, covers and supplies for Stamps for the Wounded, which is coordinated by well-known collector and philatelic writer John Hotchner. Donations are accepted beginning in November and continue through the holiday season. The club has been acknowledged as the largest single contributor to the program, which benefits injured veterans of all ages in Veterans' Affairs facilities nationwide.
